Institute Overview
The Institute for Emerging Medical Innovation is a research hub dedicated to advancing future-oriented medical technologies, building on Okayama University’s strengths in medicine and healthcare. In alignment with the University’s Long-Term Vision 2050, the Institute seeks to propel Japan’s innovative medical technologies and deep-tech research to the next level by integrating diverse disciplines, including medicine, engineering, and the natural sciences.
The Institute is structured around three core research areas:
① Development of radiopharmaceutical-based theranostic agents.
② Drug evaluation, disease modeling, and xenotransplantation research utilizing medium-sized animals.
③ Next-generation transplantation and regenerative medicine based on human pluripotent stem cells and organoid technologies.
Through these interconnected research cores, the Institute aims to create innovative medical technologies that seamlessly integrate diagnosis and therapy.
To address the limited opportunities for clinical validation and development in the Chugoku–Shikoku region, the Institute leverages strong clinical partnerships with the University Hospital and affiliated hospitals to accelerate the translation of research outcomes into real-world applications. In addition, a dedicated management framework promotes collaboration with internal and external partners, including industry and startups, to drive new value creation and industrial innovation.
By fostering an environment in which early-career researchers and graduate students can take active leadership roles, the Institute aims to serve as a leading hub that contributes to the advancement of future medicine and the long-term resolution of societal challenges.
