Starting in April 2026, the “Institute for Emerging Medical Innovation ” will be established at Okayama University.<\/p>\n

The establishment of this Institute represents an important step toward realizing Okayama University’s “Okayama University Long-term Vision 2050: Creating a University that Co-creates the Future of the Region and the Earth and Contributes to Global Innovation.” As the University has identified medicine and healthcare as a priority research area and is actively promoting the social implementation of research and innovation, the Institute will serve as a central hub for these strategic initiatives.<\/p>\n

This Institute aims to integrate the University’s strengths in clinical research, regenerative medicine research, and radiopharmaceutical research, and to promote the emergence of advanced and integrated medical technologies through interdisciplinary collaboration. Its activities are centered on three core research areas:<\/p>\n

– Radiotheranostics & Precision Medicine Innovation Core: Advancement of radiopharmaceutical-based theranostics, integrating molecular imaging and targeted therapy. By enabling precise visualization of disease at the molecular level, this approach drives the development of next-generation precision medicine that seamlessly combines diagnosis and treatment.<\/p>\n

– Translational Animal Model Innovation Core: Establishment of preclinical research platforms using medium-sized animal models such as pigs and non-human primates. This core enables clinically relevant validation of emerging medical technologies through disease modeling, pharmacological evaluation, and xenotransplantation research, thereby enhancing the reliability and translational potential of efficacy and safety assessments.<\/p>\n

– Organ Bioengineering & Regeneration Innovation Core: Advancement of next-generation transplantation and regenerative medicine based on human pluripotent stem cells and organoid technologies. By establishing scalable and reproducible strategies for generating human tissues and organs through domestic and international collaborations, this core aims to address critical challenges such as donor shortage and the need for lifelong immunosuppression, while promoting globally impactful medical innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n

To facilitate the translation of research outcomes into society, the Institute will establish the Emerging Medical Innovation Management Unit, which will oversee and promote industry\u2013academia\u2013government collaboration, startup support, and partnerships with external organizations in an integrated manner.<\/p>\n

Internationally, the Institute will advance global collaborative research with organizations such as the IAEA and leading overseas medical research institutions, taking a leading role in the fields of molecular imaging, xenotransplantation, and regenerative medicine. Through these efforts, the Institute aims to establish a globally recognized research hub originating from Japan, contributing to the extension of healthy life expectancy, reduction of healthcare costs, and worldwide dissemination of advanced medical technologies.<\/p>\n

In education, the Institute will provide graduate students and early-career researchers, particularly those in medical sciences, with opportunities to participate in specialized seminars, technical training programs, and collaborative research projects. This framework will enable them to incorporate the Institute\u2019s expertise and technologies into their own research activities.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, depending on research themes, the Institute will actively collaborate with other institutes within the Okayama University Institute of Advanced Science and Technology\u2014such as the Institute of Plant Science and Resources, the Institute for Planetary Materials, the Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Science, and the Research Institute for the Dynamics of Civilizations\u2014to foster next-generation talent equipped with interdisciplinary perspectives spanning medicine, engineering, ethics, and law.<\/p>\n

In conclusion, the establishment of this Institute is not merely an organizational restructuring. It represents Okayama University\u2019s strong commitment to creating the future of medicine and contributing to society. We sincerely appreciate your continued support and collaboration as we advance the Institute’s mission.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n
